Performers: Dylan and Devon Chan
Dylan and Devon started their violin journey at the early age of 6 and 5 years old, respectively, after Devon came across a YouTuber playing violin while simultaneously dancing around. She was immediately drawn in, thinking “that looks easy!” She will be the first to tell you how wrong she was back then! Their first violin lesson occurred in January 2020 just weeks before the entire world shut down from the COVID pandemic. Despite other extracurriculars (and even school!) taking a backseat, they devoted even more time and energy to learning the violin, even joining the Houston Youth Symphony in 2022, in which they continue to participate. Now all of their years of hard work, sweat, and tears have cumulated in this epic performance: Dylan playing the Bruch violin concerto and Devon playing the Mendelssohn violin concerto, each in its entirety. With the little time they have left, they enjoy spending it on YouTube (where it all started!), playing Roblox, drawing, crocheting, and creating a slideshow of their favorites foods (hot pot for Dylan, HEB macaroni and cheese for Devon), while begrudgingly practicing piano (a requirement from a piano mom!), learning Chinese, and doing their Russian math homework.

While Annie holds many titles these days, “Mommy” is the most important of them all, with piano accompanist taking a larger role these last few months! Annie started playing piano at the age of 5 and studied under the prestigious piano pedagogue, Mr. John Weems. She was this close to pursuing a degree in piano before deciding at the last minute to go into biology. While she stopped playing after going to college, she was forced to pick it back up when the girls started performing and needed an accompaniment. She has won several awards when she was younger, none of which she remembers because it was way too long ago.
Instructor: Mr. Gang Hou
Mr. Gang Hou is an accomplished violinist and violin instructor whose teaching career has spanned over 45 years. In his early years, he studied violin with Mr. Wang Derong in China. He was accepted into the Changying Orchestra in 1975 and recorded multiple film scores between 1975 and 1983. He performed the famous Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto as a soloist with the orchestra under the command of the famous conductor Mr. Yin Shengshan. Later, he studied under Mr. Xu Guangrong in Changchun and was subsequently admitted to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music in 1983 to study with Professor Yuan Peiwen. In 1991, he successfully obtained a Master's Degree in Violin Performance from the University of Houston, where he had the privilege of studying under renowned Ms. Fredell Lack, Mr. Kenneth Goldsmith, and Mr. Henry Rubin. In 1992, Mr. Hou performed the Bruch's Violin Concerto in G minor with the Houston Civic Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster.
In the course of his 49 year teaching career, Mr. Hou has taught students of all ages and across a breadth of experience. He was an instructor at Galveston College and the College of the Mainland for over 10 years, and taught at his private violin studio for many years. He has accumulated a wealth of teaching experience, and prides himself on adapting his teaching methods to meet every student at their individual level. He strives to utilize optimal teaching strategies to bring out the best in his students. His goal is to help students maximize their improvement and music aptitude as quickly as possible. Mr. Hou is a highly sought after teacher with excellent referrals from former students. The success of his teaching strategies is evidenced by the number of students who are accepted into the Texas All State and Regional Symphony orchestras each year. Mr. Hou strongly believes that his students' success is due to a combination of efforts from the students themselves, as well as their parents and teachers. Mr. Hou began teaching at Vivace International School of Music in November 2019 because he believes in the school's vision of providing a strong learning environment for students to grow to love music, as well as allowing students the opportunity to learn from a variety of teachers.
