The La Joie Trio will perform Baroque music composed by Quantz, Locatelli, Telemann, and CPE Bach. During the concert, the musicians will also briefly introduce the early instruments they are using, so audience has the opportunity to understand the style of early music and the historical background of their modern instruments.

Cheng-Wei Hsieh, Violinist Born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the versatile musician Cheng-Wei Hsieh is active in solo, chamber, and orchestral realms. He appears on many concert series in the Houston area, including the University of Houston faculty chamber music concert, the Clear Lake Chamber Ensemble, Cantare Houston, Southeast Texas Symphony Orchestra, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra as well as a variety of Chamber Music Outreach performances. Hsieh regularly led the Moores School Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra, and Ballet Orchestra as a concertmaster. Besides his classical training, Hsieh also specializes in Baroque violin. In 2019, Hsieh and his friends founded the La Joie Trio, a violin/flute/harpsichord baroque ensemble dedicated to the performance of early music.

In addition to performing, Hsieh is also passionate about teaching and coaching chamber music having previously served as a Teacher Assistant for the string area at the University of Houston Moores School of Music from 2016-19. During the assistantship, he taught violin private lessons, group technique class, and chamber music at undergraduate level. Currently, Hsieh maintains a private studio in the Houston metropolitan area, working with students of all ages and levels. Since 2017, Hsieh has been invited to teach and perform as a violin faculty in the Encuentro Anual de Cuerdas, a pedagogical outreach program based in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Hsieh holds his Bachelor of Music degree in Violin Performance from Tunghai University in Taichung, Taiwan, Master of Music degree from the University of North Texas, and Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Houston Moores School of Music. He was under the tutelage of Dr. Kirsten Yon, Dr. Felix Olschofka, Dr. Ming-Shi Du and Dr. Ping-Yu Chuang.



Alaina Diehl, Flutist

Alaina Diehl has performed on traverso with Ars Lyrica Houston, Mercury Chamber Orchestra, Bach Society Houston, Washington Bach Consort, Oregon Bach Festival, Austin Baroque Orchestra, Houston Baroque, Santa Fe Pro Musica, and the Victoria Bach Festival. On modern flute and piccolo, she has performed with the New Mexico Philharmonic, Opera Southwest Albuquerque, Santa Fe Symphony, Santa Fe Pro Musica, Festival Ballet Albuquerque, San Juan Symphony, and New York Gilbert and Sullivan Players. She studied at the Flute Studio of Trevor Wye in Kent, England, and has a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Houston, where she lectures for the musicology department.



Heeyeon Cha, Organist

Organist of the St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Houston, Heeyeon Cha is an active musician based on Houston area. She has performed solo recitals as an organist at major venues best known for their organ including Christ Church Cathedral, Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, St.Philip Presbyterian, South Main Baptist Church in Houston, and Christ King Catholic Church in Dallas. As an harpsichordist, she has performed as a participant of the Shenandoah Vally Bach Festival and Amherst early music festival. Her performances also include chamber recitals by Houston Early Music, Bach Society Houston and St. Mark’s Episcopal church. Heeyeon studied organ with Daryl Robinson and harpsichord with Matthew Dirst at the University of Houston’s Moore School of Music. She holds organ performance degrees from the University of Houston (C.M.P.), the University of Washington (M.M.), Presbyterian University and Theological Seminary (B.M.) in Seoul, South Korea.
