Conductor and violinist

One of the leading violinists of his generation, Yang Xiaoyu is a frequent guest of all the major concert stages in China, appearing in recitals, chamber music and orchestral concerts. A professor at the China Conservatory of Music in Beijing, previously he has served as the founding concert master of the National Centre for the Performing Arts Orchestra in Beijing for eight years before his podium debut in 2018 conducting Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20 with the China Academia Orchestra.

Over the past several years Yang is active on the podium, conducting or leading the Harbin Symphony (one of the oldest orchestras in China), Wuhan Philharmonic and Beijing Symphony Orchestra, performing a diversified programme ranging from Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, Schubert Symphony No. 9, Symphony No. 41 and overture to Le Nozze di Figaro by Mozart to Siegfried Idyll by Richard Wagner.

Born in 1986 to a musical family in Harbin of China, Yang Xiaoyu began to learn violin at the age of 5. He was admitted to the middle school affiliated to the Central Conservatory of Music at 11, studying for eight years with Prof Lin Yaoji who is widely considered pillar of violin teaching in China. At 16 he won the gold prize in the junior competition named after Tchaikovsky.

Yang launched his career as a concert violinist at the age of 13, for over 20 years since then he has performed with major orchestras at leading venues and festivals: Seoul Arts Centre, Sydney Opera House, the Asian Orchestras Week in Tokyo and Osaka, the George Enescu Festival in Bucharest, or judging at important international music festivals in Korea, Hong Kong and Vienna.

He holds diplomas from Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, Hochschule Musik und Theater Zürich, and obtained his master’s degree from Mozarteum University Salzburg.
