Sophia Liu

Sophia Liu is a passionate music educator who specializes in music theory, cello and children's chamber music. With a strong background in both performance and research, she brings a thoughtful and well-rounded approach to teaching young musicians. She has taught cello performance, cello ensemble, and music theory at the Vivace International School of Music in Houston, and has worked with students in both China and the United States. Her teaching experience includes private lessons, group classes, ensemble coaching, and music education for elementary-age students.

Growing up in a family that appreciated music and the performing arts, Sophia developed a love for music at an early age. She began studying piano as a child and later pursued the cello under the guidance of her father, Professor Dahai Liu. Through years of study and performance, she developed a strong interest in both music performance and music history, which eventually led her to pursue musicology alongside her instrumental training.

Sophia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Music Literature from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where she also performed with the Shanghai Youth Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2015. Her academic research explored topics such as Blues music and the appearance of Chinese musical elements in Western compositions, and her work was archived on musicology.cn.

She later continued her studies in the United States, completing her Master's degree in Musicology at the University of Memphis. During her time there, she performed baroque cello in Collegium Musicum, the university's historical performance ensemble directed by Dr. Kenneth Kreitner. The ensemble included a baroque orchestra and Renaissance wind band dedicated to historically informed performance and regularly appeared at church services and community cultural events. Sophia also contributed to the Memphis arts community as an event coordinator at the Center for Southern Folklore.

Over the years, Sophia has helped students prepare for performances, examinations, and auditions, supporting them through each stage of their musical development. She previously participated as a staff member in the Cello Grading Examination program administered by the Cello Committee of the China Musicians Association, an experience that deepened her understanding of student development and performance preparation. In addition to one-on-one instruction, she enjoys teaching group classes and ensemble music, helping students learn from one another while developing confidence, listening skills, and teamwork.

Sophia values open communication with families and strives to create a supportive learning environment for every student. She welcomes parents who wish to observe lessons and believes that collaboration between teachers, students, and families plays an important role in musical growth. Whether working with a young beginner, an ensemble, or a more experienced musician, her goal is to help students build confidence, develop strong musical foundations, and enjoy the process of learning music.

 

Teaching Philosophy

Every student learns differently, and I believe effective teaching begins with understanding each student's individual strengths, interests, and learning style. Whether in a private lesson or a group class, I strive to provide personalized guidance and help each student build confidence through music.

For beginning students, my goal is to make music learning an exciting and rewarding journey. I encourage students to stay curious, be patient with challenges, and explore the many opportunities that music can offer. Rather than focusing only on results, I help students develop a strong foundation and a lasting enjoyment of learning.

For more advanced students, I serve as both a teacher and a coach, helping them refine their technique, strengthen their musicianship, and prepare for performances, auditions, and examinations. I encourage students to set ambitious goals while maintaining a healthy balance between discipline and enjoyment.

​

Above all, I believe music education should be meaningful, supportive, and enjoyable. I strive to connect lessons to each student's interests and experiences, creating an environment where they feel encouraged to grow, express themselves, and take pride in their accomplishments.
